Also known by its U.S. title, The Intrusion of Jimmy, A Gentleman of Leisure (1910) begins with a bet. Jimmy Pitt, a rich young American, wagers that he can burgle a house in New York and soon falls in with Spike Mullins, a real burglar. In England he meets Molly McEachern, daughter of a crooked New York police captain, at Dreever Castle, where a valuable necklace and a hapless young earl complicate matters.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
