A Letter in the Scroll: Understanding Our Jewish Identity and Exploring the Legacy of the World's Oldest Religion

A Letter in the Scroll (2000) is Rabbi Jonathan Sacks's account of why Jewish identity matters, written for Jews who wonder why they should remain Jewish. It was published in Britain as Radical Then, Radical Now. Sacks presents Jewish history as an ancient covenantal story in which each Jew is a letter in the scroll of the Torah. He describes Judaism's ideas about the dignity of the individual, the meaning of history and the duty to learn, and argues that they are as radical and relevant as when first taught.
