A Patchwork Planet is a 1998 novel by Anne Tyler, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Breathing Lessons. Like most of her books, it is set in Baltimore. Barnaby Gaitlin, thirty years old, divorced, and the black sheep of a wealthy family, works for a company called Rent-a-Back, doing chores for elderly clients. He hopes to find the angel his family believes will turn his life around, and he wonders whether a woman he meets on a train might be his.
