A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1859 and set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. After eighteen years in the Bastille, Doctor Manette is released and taken to London, where he meets his daughter, Lucie, for the first time. Their lives become entangled with those of Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat who has rejected his family's cruelty, and Sydney Carton, a dissipated English lawyer, as revolution sweeps across France.
