Abraham Lincoln: A History, Volume 1

By John G. Nicolay, John Hay

Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History

John G. Nicolay and John Hay were Abraham Lincoln's private secretaries, and their history of his life and times filled ten volumes on its 1890 publication. This first volume traces the Lincoln family's migration to Kentucky and Lincoln's youth in Indiana and Illinois. It follows his years at New Salem, the Black Hawk War, law practice, marriage and term in Congress, and concludes with the slavery crisis of the 1850s and the conflict over Kansas.
