Abraham Lincoln: Speeches and Writings 1859-1865
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
The second of the Library of America's two volumes of Abraham Lincoln's writings covers 1859 through April 1865. It collects his speeches, letters, messages to Congress, proclamations and public papers, including the Cooper Union address, both inaugural addresses, the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation. Read in sequence, the pieces reveal Lincoln's growth in both prose and leadership, from arguing against slavery's expansion to defining the war's purposes at Gettysburg and in his second inaugural.
