American Gods (2001) is Neil Gaiman's novel about Shadow Moon, released from prison days after his wife's death and hired as bodyguard by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. Shadow is pulled into a brewing conflict between the old gods brought to America by immigrants and the new gods of media, technology and money. Crossing the country with Wednesday, he meets forgotten deities clinging to what belief remains and learns what Americans worship when they stop naming it.
