Rosalind, daughter of a banished duke, is exiled in turn by her usurping uncle and escapes to the Forest of Arden disguised as a young man, with her cousin Celia. There she meets Orlando, who loves her and has fled his own cruel brother. Shakespeare based the comedy on Thomas Lodge's romance Rosalynde. Written around 1599 and first printed in 1623, it contains Jaques's speech beginning "All the world's a stage."
