Away (1993) by Jane Urquhart is a novel spanning several generations of an Irish family. In the 1840s, on Rathlin Island off the coast of Ireland, young Mary finds a dying sailor washed ashore, and afterward her community believes she has been taken "away" by otherworldly forces. As famine grips the country, Mary and her husband emigrate to the wilderness of Upper Canada, beginning a story carried down through their descendants.
