Bad Habit (2023) is the debut novel of Spanish writer Alana S. Portero, about a trans girl growing up in a working-class neighbourhood of Madrid in the 1980s and 1990s. The narrator grows up in San Blas, a district marked by heroin, poverty and machismo, hiding who she is from her family and neighbours. She finds refuge in books, films and the women around her, and later in Madrid's nightlife, as she tries to become herself.
