Blindsight

In 2082 thousands of objects dubbed Fireflies burn up in a precise grid over Earth, announcing an alien presence. The ship Theseus heads for the solar system's edge, led by Jukka Sarasti, a vampire resurrected through genetic engineering. The narrator, Siri Keeton, missing half his brain and trained to observe and report on his crewmates, travels with a linguist who has four personalities as the crew meets a vast vessel calling itself Rorschach. Peter Watts asks whether intelligence needs consciousness.
