Graham Greene's 1938 novel opens in the seaside town of Brighton, where Fred Hale, a newspaperman handing out prize cards for a promotion, is killed by a gang led by the teenage Pinkie Brown. To silence a witness, Pinkie courts and marries Rose, a naive young waitress, while Ida Arnold, a warm, worldly woman who met Hale on his last day, sets out to prove he was murdered. Through Pinkie and Rose, both Roman Catholics, Greene explores sin, damnation and mercy.
