By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept (1945) is a short prose-poem novel by Canadian writer Elizabeth Smart. Written in dense, lyrical language full of biblical and literary echoes, it describes a young woman's passionate and painful love affair with a married poet, from their first meeting in California to the strains of pregnancy, separation and a police arrest as they travel across America. The story is drawn from Smart's own relationship with the English poet George Barker.

- Ryan Holiday: “By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept. What a title. This book is a fever dream, but it is beautiful and it lives up to the title.”
