Caesar: A Biography
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
Caesar (Basic Books) is German historian Christian Meier's biography of Julius Caesar, translated into English by David McLintock. Meier places Caesar inside the crisis of the late Roman Republic, tracing his rise from aristocratic maverick to general and dictator. He argues that Caesar stood outside the political order, saw its failings clearly but could offer nothing to replace it, and that his assassination followed from that.
