City of Thieves
Categories: Literature & Fiction
City of Thieves is a 2008 novel by David Benioff, the screenwriter who later co-created the HBO series Game of Thrones. It is framed as the story of the author's grandfather, Lev Beniov, a seventeen-year-old in Leningrad during the German siege of 1942. Arrested for looting, Lev is paired with Kolya, a charming army deserter, and the two are given a strange order by a Soviet colonel: find a dozen eggs for his daughter's wedding cake within days or be executed. Their search takes them across the starving city and behind enemy lines.
