Composing a Life
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, Self-Help
In Composing a Life (1989), anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson follows five accomplished women, herself included, through careers interrupted by moves, family needs and changing opportunities. Rather than treating such interruptions as failures, Bateson shows how the women improvised lives out of shifting roles and competing demands, much as an artist composes. She argues that this adaptive, discontinuous pattern is a model for how many people can and do live.
