Coriolanus
Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction
Drawn from Plutarch, Shakespeare's Roman tragedy of about 1608 first appeared in the 1623 First Folio. Caius Martius earns the name Coriolanus by capturing the Volscian town of Corioles and returns to Rome a hero, expected to stand for consul. His open contempt for the plebeians, stirred up by two tribunes, gets him banished. He then joins his old enemy Tullus Aufidius and marches on Rome, where his mother, Volumnia, must plead with him.
