Creation Lake (2024) is a novel by Rachel Kushner narrated by a woman who calls herself Sadie Smith, an American agent hired to infiltrate radical groups. Sadie is sent to a rural area of southwest France to spy on a commune of environmental activists opposing industrial agriculture. Through emails she reads, she becomes absorbed by the ideas of Bruno Lacombe, an ageing radical living in a cave who writes about Neanderthals and the origins of human civilisation.
