Digital Fortress (1998) is Dan Brown's first novel, a techno-thriller set inside the U.S. National Security Agency. The agency's code-breaking supercomputer meets an encryption it cannot crack, and head cryptographer Susan Fletcher is called in to find out why. What she uncovers could leave American intelligence blind, and the hunt for the code's key spreads from Maryland to Seville. Running through the plot is an argument about the trade-off between personal privacy and government surveillance.
