Edith's Diary is a 1977 novel by Patricia Highsmith, better known for her Ripley books. Edith Howland moves with her husband and young son from New York to a small Pennsylvania town, where she starts a diary and helps run a local newspaper. Over two decades her marriage ends, her son Cliffie drifts into idleness and her husband's elderly uncle becomes her burden. In the diary, Edith invents a happier life for her family, and the gap between that record and reality slowly widens.
