Equus
Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction
Peter Shaffer's 1973 play Equus opens after seventeen-year-old stable boy Alan Strang blinds six horses with a metal spike. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart is asked to treat him. As Dysart draws out Alan's private worship of horses, tangled with religion, sexuality and his parents' conflicts, the doctor's own empty routines come into view. The play stages a clash between passion and the cost of making someone "normal."
