Explain Pain (NOI Group, 2nd edition, 2013) is an illustrated guide by physiotherapist David Butler and pain scientist Lorimer Moseley to the biology of pain. Using cartoons and metaphors, the authors explain how nerves send danger signals, how the spinal cord and brain process them, and why pain is produced by the brain as a protector rather than a direct measure of tissue damage. They describe how the system can become oversensitive in persistent pain, and how understanding this, with graded activity, aids recovery.

- Tim Ferriss: “I know that, and I'm reading a number of books, Lorimer Moseley and his co-author have, actually, a very interesting book called Explain Pain , and it relates to this piece that came up maybe, which is why I wanted to talk about it.”
