Free: Coming of Age at the End of History

Free: Coming of Age at the End of History (2021) is political theorist Lea Ypi's memoir of growing up in communist Albania and living through its collapse. As a child, Ypi believes in the socialist state and its leaders, until the regime falls in 1990 and she learns that her family's past was hidden from her. She describes the chaos that follows as the country moves to a market economy, and reflects on the meaning of freedom under both systems.
