Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953), James Baldwin's first novel, is set in Harlem on John Grimes's fourteenth birthday in 1935; this is the Vintage International edition. John's stepfather, Gabriel, is a harsh Pentecostal preacher, and the boy fears him and doubts the church. In the central section, the prayers of his aunt Florence, of Gabriel and of his mother, Elizabeth, reveal their pasts, before John undergoes a religious awakening on the floor of the storefront church.
