Going Solo continues the memoir Roald Dahl began in Boy, following him from 1938, when Shell posted him to Dar es Salaam in Tanganyika, through his service as a fighter pilot in the Second World War. He describes black mambas, a lion that seized a cook's wife and the colonial characters of East Africa. The 1986 book also covers RAF training in Kenya and Iraq, a crash in the Libyan desert that left him badly injured and air combat over Greece in Hurricanes.
