Kurt Vonnegut's 1970 play recasts the homecoming of Odysseus as dark comedy. Harold Ryan, a hunter and war hero missing in the Amazon for eight years, returns to find his wife, Penelope, courted by a salesman and a pacifist doctor. Voices from heaven break in, among them Wanda June, a child struck by an ice-cream truck, and an SS officer Harold once killed. The play opened Off-Broadway in 1970 and was filmed in 1971.
