An early version of this history play was printed in 1594 as The First Part of the Contention. Shakespeare followed the weak, pious Henry VI as Queen Margaret and the Duke of Suffolk scheme against the king's protector, the Duke of Gloucester. Meanwhile Richard, Duke of York, builds his claim to the throne and stirs up Jack Cade's rebellion. The play includes the rebel Dick the Butcher's line "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
