Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in an Age of Distraction (2017) is a book by Atlantic writer Derek Thompson, published by Penguin Press. Thompson asks why some songs, films, products and ideas become hugely popular while most do not. Drawing on psychology, economics and media history, he argues that hits balance familiarity with surprise, citing designer Raymond Loewy's "most advanced yet acceptable" principle and the effect of repeated exposure, while acknowledging the role of marketing and luck.
