Elie Wiesel's novel, first published in French in 2010, opens in 1975, when Shaltiel Feigenberg, a professional storyteller in Brooklyn, is kidnapped by two terrorists, an Arab and an Italian, who demand the release of Palestinian prisoners. Held in a basement and threatened with death, Shaltiel turns to the stories of his own life, including his father's survival of the Holocaust, to hold on to hope.
