How to Be Free: An Ancient Guide to the Stoic Life

By Epictetus, A. A. Long

How to Be Free (Princeton, 2018) pairs classicist A. A. Long's translation of Epictetus's Encheiridion with selections from his Discourses, with the Greek on facing pages. Epictetus, born into slavery and freed in Rome, taught Stoic philosophy at Nicopolis in Greece, where his student Arrian recorded his lessons. The handbook teaches that freedom comes from separating what is in our power, our judgments, desires and choices, from what is not, such as health, wealth and reputation, and from meeting misfortune with reason.
