Game designer and futurist Jane McGonigal of the Institute for the Future argues that people can prepare for disruption by imagining the future vividly and in detail. Her 2022 book offers exercises for picturing life ten years ahead and for spotting early signals of change. McGonigal draws on large social simulations she has designed, among them a 2010 game about a respiratory pandemic whose players reported feeling less shocked when COVID-19 arrived.
