Imaginary Friend (2019) by Stephen Chbosky is a horror novel set in a small town in Pennsylvania. Kate Reese flees an abusive relationship with her seven-year-old son, Christopher, and settles in Mill Grove. When Christopher disappears into the woods for six days, he returns with new abilities and a voice in his head, an imaginary friend who tells him he must build a treehouse by Christmas or his mother and the town will die. Soon, the townspeople begin to change.
