Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity, and Adoption

By Randall Kennedy

Categories: History, Politics & Social Sciences

In Interracial Intimacies (2003), legal scholar Randall Kennedy examines the history of sex, marriage and adoption across racial lines in the United States, from slavery and anti-miscegenation laws to the Supreme Court's 1967 decision in Loving v. Virginia. Kennedy then turns to later debates over racial identity, passing and transracial adoption. He argues against policies that make race a barrier to adoption and marriage, and makes the case for treating such intimacy as a matter of individual choice.
