King John

By William Shakespeare

Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction

King John's right to the English crown is challenged by supporters of his young nephew Arthur, backed by the King of France, in this Shakespeare history play, first published in 1623. The quarrel draws in nobles, the Pope's legate and two armies. At its center stands Philip the Bastard, the illegitimate son of Richard the Lionheart, whose blunt, sardonic commentary punctuates the politics. Shakespeare probably wrote it in the mid-1590s.
