Legacy of Ashes

Legacy of Ashes (2007) by New York Times reporter Tim Weiner is a history of the Central Intelligence Agency from its founding in 1947. Drawing on declassified documents and interviews with former officers, Weiner traces the agency's operations and failures through the Cold War, the Vietnam War and the years after the September 11 attacks. He argues that the CIA repeatedly failed in its main task of providing accurate intelligence to presidents.
