Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer explores how Abraham Lincoln worked with, and against, the newspapers of his era in this 2014 history. Holzer follows Lincoln's dealings with the three great New York editors, Horace Greeley of the Tribune, James Gordon Bennett of the Herald and Henry J. Raymond of the Times. Lincoln courted reporters, leaked stories and secretly bought a German-language Illinois paper in 1859 to win immigrant votes. As president, his administration also shut down hostile papers during the Civil War.
