Categories: Literature & Fiction
Looking Backward: 2000-1887 is an 1888 utopian novel by the American writer Edward Bellamy, one of the best-selling books of its time, which inspired political clubs and movements across the United States. Julian West, a wealthy Bostonian, falls into a hypnotic sleep in 1887 and wakes in the year 2000 to find a peaceful, cooperative society in which industry is nationalized, everyone retires at forty-five and goods are distributed through a form of credit card, as his guide explains how the new world works.

- Margaret Atwood: “These are some of the books I have read and enjoyed. … Looking Backward is more "20th C" in its briskness, and it predicted credit cards, for what that’s worth.”
