Love Among the Chickens (1906), Wodehouse's first novel for grown-up readers, introduced Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge. Ukridge persuades his friend Jeremy Garnet, a writer, to help him start a chicken farm on the Dorset coast with almost no money or knowledge. Garnet falls for Phyllis Derrick, the daughter of a touchy professor who lives nearby, and tries to win her father's approval while the farm lurches from one crisis to the next.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
