Man's Search For Meaning

By Viktor Frankl

Categories: History, Religion & Spirituality

Before the war, Viktor Frankl was a respected psychiatrist in Vienna. In Auschwitz, he watched how he and his fellow prisoners endured, and noticed that the men who comforted others and gave away their last piece of bread often survived the longest. From that experience comes his central idea: everything can be taken from us except the freedom to choose our attitude. Frankl argues that our deepest drive is the search for meaning, and shows how purpose can carry a person through the worst suffering.
