Mutant Message Down Under is Marlo Morgan's account of an American woman who joins a band of Aboriginal people, calling themselves the Real People, on a four-month walk across the Australian Outback. On the route she learns how they find food and water, heal, and live in harmony with the land and one another, and she receives their message about caring for the planet. Self-published in 1990 and later issued by HarperCollins as fiction, the book has drawn criticism from Aboriginal groups who say it misrepresents their cultures.
