Jean Craighead George's 1959 novel is told by Sam Gribley, a boy who leaves his family's crowded New York City apartment to live alone in the Catskill Mountains on the abandoned farm of his great-grandfather. Sam hollows out a giant hemlock tree for a home, learns to gather wild food and trains a peregrine falcon chick he names Frightful to hunt for him. He befriends a weasel and a raccoon and faces a winter on his own.
