Night Mowing
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Night Mowing is a 2005 poetry collection by Chard deNiord, published in the Pitt Poetry Series by the University of Pittsburgh Press. deNiord later served as poet laureate of Vermont from 2015 to 2019. The poems are mostly short and pastoral, set in rural New England landscapes of fields, woods, and animals. deNiord moves from close observation of the natural world to questions of faith, mortality, and desire. This is a slim book of lyric poems, written in plain but carefully shaped language.

- Stephen King: “This is a slim book of poems, mostly pastoral. There’s little narrative clarity, but deNiord evokes rural scenes with undertones of violence and a breathless, calm clarity that’s close to déjà vu.”
