Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs
Ulysses S. Grant wrote his memoirs in 1884 and 1885, after a Wall Street fraud had left him bankrupt and while he was dying of throat cancer. He finished them days before his death, and Mark Twain's publishing firm brought them out. Grant recounts his boyhood in Ohio, West Point and service in the Mexican War, then the Civil War campaigns from Fort Donelson and Shiloh to Vicksburg, Chattanooga and Appomattox. His prose is plain, direct and largely free of self-justification.
