Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog
By Dylan Thomas
Categories: Literature & Fiction
First published in 1940, this collection of ten autobiographical stories follows a young Dylan Thomas from childhood through his teens as a junior reporter on a Swansea newspaper. The title nods to James Joyce. In "The Peaches" and "A Visit to Grandpa's" a boy stays with relatives in rural Carmarthenshire, while "One Warm Saturday" ranges across Swansea's beach and pubs. Comic and lyrical by turns, the stories portray townspeople through a young observer's eyes.
