Psmith in the City (1910) follows Mike Jackson, whose family has lost its money, to a dull clerk's job at the New Asiatic Bank in London instead of university. His friend Psmith, a monocled, endlessly talkative Old Etonian, takes a job at the bank too. Psmith attaches himself to the bank's pompous manager, Mr. Bickersdyke, following him to his club and heckling his political speeches, while Mike struggles with office life and misses his cricket.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
