Satyagraha in South Africa
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
Mohandas K. Gandhi wrote this history of his struggle in South Africa in the 1920s, largely while imprisoned in Yerawada jail. He recounts how the Indian community in the Transvaal and Natal resisted discriminatory laws between 1906 and 1914, and how that campaign shaped satyagraha, his method of nonviolent resistance. He describes the marches, strikes and imprisonments, and the settlement with Jan Smuts, before he returned to India.
