Sergio Y. (Europa Editions, 2016; translated by Alex Ladd) is Alexandre Vidal Porto's novel about Armando, a Sao Paulo therapist unsettled by a teenage patient who quits treatment after a trip to New York. Years later Armando learns the patient lived in New York as Sandra and was murdered. His private inquiry into gender, migration and happiness forces him to face what therapy missed and how little one person can know of another.
