In Janet Evanovich's seventh Stephanie Plum novel, published in 2001, Stephanie must bring in Eddie DeChooch, a semi-retired mobster arrested for cigarette smuggling, who for an old man has a knack for slipping out of sight. A bullet-riddled body turns up in Eddie's garden and two of Stephanie's friends vanish, forcing her to strike a costly bargain with Ranger. At home, her estranged sister returns with a bombshell, Grandma Mazur forms an unlikely alliance with Eddie, and Joe Morelli proposes.
