With Something Fresh (1915; U.S. title Something New), P. G. Wodehouse introduced Blandings Castle, the absent-minded Lord Emsworth and his secretary, the Efficient Baxter. Emsworth pockets a valuable scarab belonging to the American millionaire J. Preston Peters, whose daughter is engaged to Emsworth's son Freddie. Ashe Marson, a writer of detective stories, and Joan Valentine, a journalist, take jobs at the castle as servants, each hoping to steal it back for a reward.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
