Beevor Castle, the Kentish home of the impoverished Earl of Shortlands, is the scene of Spring Fever (1948). His daughters' romances worry him, and his butler, Spink, is his rival for the hand of the cook, Mrs. Punter. Visitors from America and the family's own schemes add to the confusion, and much of the plot turns on a rare and valuable stamp, which several people are determined to get their hands on.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
